Sunglasses of Tom Ford

In his first design outing since his departure from the Gucci Group, Tom Ford is back at Harvey Nichols with a new range of sunglasses, sold under his own name that is surely this Winter’s most covetable eyewear. So why did Tom choose sunglasses for his first solo project? Well as far as accessories go, they’re a personal favourite.

In the range there are both classic and more directional women’s frames (above left) as well as slightly rakish designs for men (above right) – as you might expect, most possess that sexy seventies styling that Tom has so successfully made his own. The style names are as evocative of the era as the designs themselves, Farrah and Ryan for example. But there are also frames named after Tom’s loyal assistant Whitney and his long-term partner Richard Buckley of Vogue Homme, that demonstrate the personal level on which this project has been carried out.

Interest in the sunglasses from fashion insiders has already become so intense that many styles now have waiting lists. They are due in-store in the final week of November so you’ll need to move quickly to lay your hands on the right pair.

Also look out for the results of Tom’s other current project, his reworking of the classic Youth Dew fragrance from Esteé Lauder. Youth Dew Amber Nude arrives at the Esteé Lauder counter at the London store on 5th December, to be followed by a full Tom Ford cosmetics collection next year.

MR. F. AND THE WOMEN: Tom Ford has made no secret of his Hollywood ambitions, but he has managed to keep the particulars quiet — until now. According to a source with knowledge of Ford’s plans, the former Gucci creative director is days away from securing a deal to direct a remake of “The Women,” the 1939 George Cukor film based on the play of the same name by Clare Boothe Luce. New Line Cinema owns the rights to the film, and has been seeking for years to mount a new production. In October 2004, Variety reported that “Murphy Brown” creator Diane English would direct a version from her own script. Meg Ryan, Annette Bening, Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd and Uma Thurman were said to be in talks for roles, and Mick Jagger‘s film company, Jagged Films, was to produce. But the production apparently never came together, and English’s option on the title is set to expire, according to the source — clearing the way for Ford to step in. English’s agent did not respond to a request for comment, while Ford, via a spokeswoman, said he was in talks about several potential film projects, but “The Women” was not among them.

Tom Ford can’t stay away

can.JPG There seems no end to the talent of Tom Ford, the former world power designer for Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. When he left last year after a clash with the new owners, the fashion world mourned.

Ford wants to make movies, but right now he’s planning a second coming with perfume and makeup. He has formed an alliance with Estee Lauder called the Tom Ford Estee Lauder Collection and redesigned Youth Dew as part of it. “My grandmother wore Youth Dew from the early 60s to the day she died. I live in her house now, in New Mexico, and there are moments when I can still smell her Youth Dew.”

For his latest creations he lightened the scent, the concentration of patchouli and the colour of the fragrance and called it Amber Nude.

Makeup also gets the Ford treatment. He’s concentrated on nude shades for the lips and nails. “The look I always love is a neutral mouth, beautiful skin and a dramatic, strong eye. This collection is really one look that works for various skin tones. And I’ve used real gold in the makeup so that it is very light, very natural, but with a glamorous edge.”

Although the Northern Hemisphere gets the goods in December, we have to wait until April for the perfume and September for the makeup.

Fashion mogul plans hilltop palacio

23459_600x400.jpgFashion designer Tom Ford plans to build an adobe mansion atop Talaya Hill, reviving attention on a vacant lot that a decade ago was the focus of a fight over hilltop development .

The privacy-conscious 44-yearold , who grew up on Santa Fe’s east side before rising to the top of the fashion world, bought the 10-acre lot last year through a corporation, Angus Buckley LLC — named for his companion of 20 years, journalist Richard Buckley, and their 3-year-old fox terrier, Angus. the city for a house with a footprint of more than 17,000-square feet and a swimming pool, Ford acknowledged he is behind the project at the east end of Camino Santander.

“I haven’t tried to be particularly secretive about it,” he said. “But you don’t want to advertise where you live. If you’re a public person, you don’t necessarily want people to know what you’re doing.”

The property’s previous owners, Wall Street investor Paul Tierney and his wife, Susan, fought with Ford’s lawyers and other agents initially declined to confirm he owned the company. But this week, after submitting plans to neighbors and elected city officials over plans to put up a 8,000-square-foot house and separate garage there in the 1990s. The city and its insurers ended up paying the Tierneys $300,000 in 1996 to drop a federal lawsuit. And four years of legal challenges by the San Acacio Neighborhood Association finally ended in 2000 when the New Mexico Court of Appeals tossed out the neighbors’ lawsuit .

But the Tierneys dropped their plans in 2003 and put the property up for sale for $1.7 million .

In anticipation of similar struggles, Ford and his agents have approached their project carefully, meeting with neighbors and seeking to minimize descriptions of the project’s size.

For example, an application to the Historic Design Review Board, which is set to consider the project’s exterior design next month, says the total roofed area of the house is 17,147 square feet — about the size of the Palace of the Governors. But Ford attorney Janet McKay said this is an inaccurate description because the footprint includes an interior courtyard covered by a pergola with open beams. If the courtyard, portales, a small basement and a garage with a caretaker suite are subtracted, she said, the main house measures 10,600 square feet. When its double-adobe walls are excluded, she said, the house is only 8,512 square feet.

Ford said he needs a large house to accommodate his parents , his sister and her children who often visit him. He already owns the east-side home where he grew up, plus a ranch with an orchard and vineyard near Galisteo where he is building a house. He also has homes in Los Angeles and London.

Unlike other hilltops that have been the focus of debates over preserving ridgelines from development, the Talaya Hill location is not pristine. The new house, garage and swimming pool would be built within a “bowl” that was shaped in the late 1800s to hold a small reservoir that provided water pressure to surrounding homes.

However, neighbors in the past have objected to the idea of a large house that would look down on their homes.

“Due to the visual sensitivity,” wrote Los Angeles architect Leo Marmol in a letter to the Historic Design Review Board, parts of the one-story , Spanish-Pueblo-style house will be 5 feet below grade and no part will rise more than 14 feet above grade. He said the earth-toned adobe walls will be “shaped by hand to appear textured and undulating” and will be “created by use of paja” — or adobe with extra straw. Eight-foottall mature evergreens will be planted every 15 feet of linear wall space to shield the house from view, Marmol wrote.

Ford’s agents declined to estimate construction costs. But contractors say well-finished adobes run more than $400 per square foot — which would easily push the price into the millions of dollars. Among the Santa Fe contractors listed on the application are McDowell Construction, P.E. McGinnis & Associates, Druc Engineering, DeLapp Engineering, Cottonwood Engineering and Yager Land Surveys.

Even though city regulations do not require early-neighborhood-notification meetings for single homes, Ford and his representatives have been meeting with neighborhood groups to explain their plans. Ford said he already has made some changes to accommodate neighbors’ concerns. But some neighborhood residents are still wary.

“I wish that we could save these hilltops,” said Mary Jean Cook, who lives next to Ford’s lot. “In that Tom grew up here, I was hoping he might feel that way, too.”

Cook, who with her husband, Edward, put their historic home up for sale for $15 million three years ago, said she regrets Santa Fe did not block development on Santa Fe’s main promontories years ago. “This one is so visible from the whole town,” she said. “People are going to shocked who are going to see this — everybody. It’s quite a grand palais.”

Peter Shoenfeld, vice president of the San Acacio Neighborhood Association, said he has suggested making the structure less visible by altering the garage, moving the main house back from the brow of the hill and reducing its overall dimensions .

“Those should not be objectionable changes to Tom Ford, who has said he did not buy the property for the view but instead bought it for its privacy,” Shoenfeld said. “So we’re hoping there will be some modifications .”

Richard Ellenberg, a director and treasurer of the Canyon Neighborhood Association, said the rectangular house on the oval-shaped reservoir appears to “pierce the berm” in places. Although the design might shield the house from view of people directly below it, he said, it will be highly visible to residents of Apodaca Hill, Wilderness Gate and other east-side neighborhoods.

Ellenberg said when he met with Ford’s agents, they told him they could not show him the interior-floor plan, with each room labeled, because of Ford’s desire for privacy. “It’s the first time I’ve sat down with a bunch of architects and not have all the plans sitting there,” Ellenberg said.

Ford attorney McKay said neighbors have a right to know what the exterior of Ford’s house will look like, but “we don’t want people to know where his bedroom is.”

Ellenberg said more needs to be known about Ford’s plans, and he is considering organizing a public hearing on the project. The lawyer, who worked on land-use cases in Georgia, also wants to study how the plans fit the city escarpment ordinance, which limits construction on ridges.

Ford’s agents, Ellenberg said, have indicated the federal court order in the Tierney case exempts their client from the escarpment regulations. “Everyone seems to assume there’s something in that order that allows it to be built on the ridge top, but no one knows that yet,” he said. “So that needs some explanation.”

Ford says he welcomes the scrutiny.

“I know these things can turn into quite an issue in Santa Fe, and I just wanted to make sure that everyone had the right information,” he said. “We’re trying to work with everyone that we can to try to make everyone as happy as they can be. I know some people would love not to see anything built on that site. But it is a site that’s got a legal building lot, and it’s a very beautiful site, and we’re trying to make our house disappear .”


Ford: Santa Fe has always been home

23460_600x400.jpgFashion designer Tom Ford was born in 1961 in Austin, Texas, and began coming to Santa Fe as a child to visit his grandmother, Ruth Bibo.

His father, also named Tom Ford but with a different middle initial, used to own Chaparral Realty. The elder Ford continues to live in Santa Fe. Ford’s mother, Shirley Burton, now lives in Texas, but returns often to visit her son, who estimates he spends three to four months each year in Santa Fe.

The Fords moved to Santa Fe when he was 11 years old. He attended Santa Fe Preparatory School, and in 1979, left to attend college at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where he spent much of his time there observing celebrities at the Studio 54 nightclub and traveling to Europe.

In 1990, he joined Gucci, where he rose to creative director and then vice president. He also became creative director of Yves Saint Laurent and is credited with turning the companies’ fortunes around. He now is working on a line of beauty products for Esteé Lauder and looking for film projects to direct.

Ford, dubbed “the King of Cool” in one online biography, is known for strong, sexy designs. He sports facial stubble and partially unbuttoned shirts. Critics have suggested Ford is good at marketing, not design. He has responded that being labeled commercial is a compliment because “it means it looks great and people want it.”

Ford spoke to The New Mexican about the mansion he is planning to build atop Talaya Hill by telephone this week from his penthouse suite in the Carlyle Hotel in New York, where he was registered under a pseudonym.

Question: Why the secrecy?

Answer: In places like London and Los Angeles, I’m extremely well-known and it’s pretty standard practice to buy property — a lot of people do it — in the name of … different companies. … I knew at a certain point we would want to approach the neighbors and talk to them about what we are planning on doing. … I’m a very private person, and it’s also one reason that I bought that property. It is at the end of a road, and as I explained to the neighbors who were concerned that they were going to see our house, in an ideal world, I would love it if you didn’t see our house at all, and that’s one reason I am building there.

Question: Why this site?

Answer: I have a house in town now which is on the other side of Talaya Hill, which is where I grew up. I’d rather not give my address. … I had been looking for a great place in Santa Fe for quite a while and just hadn’t found anything that was right and then saw that piece of property. … I had also sort of hated to leave my current house because, as I said, I grew up in it, so the views are really the same I’ve been looking at since I was 5 years old. … I can almost see my chimney from this piece of property. … It really feels like home already. That entire neighborhood is home to me.

Question: What have you proposed that isn’t required by city ordinances?

Answer: There are a lot of things that we’re not necessarily required to do by law, but that we’re trying to do. We’re working on pulling back the house. We’re contemplating taking a bay off the garage to reduce it in size because of some of the neighbors’ concerns. … Our ranch outside of town is being designed by a Japanese architect, Tadao Ando, as a very contemporary building, so, in town, what we wanted was a very traditional adobe home. … We’re trying to integrate the house into the site as well as possible to make the planes of the house not rigid and to let them step forward and step back in the roof line. … We’ve actually dug down the inside of the house.

Question: Do you plan to spend more time in Santa Fe?

Answer: I’ve always thought of Santa Fe as my home. It’s a place that even when I’m not there, I think in my mind when I close my eyes to go to sleep, it’s really where my home is. … It’s not so easy to be a fashion designer in Santa Fe. It’s easier in New York or London or Paris, but as time goes by and I have the freedom to do it, I’d love to spend more and more time in Santa Fe and ultimately live there full-time at some point in my life. I love Santa Fe. I think it’s really one of the most beautiful places in the world, and one of the things I do love about it is the architectural unity of the city and the fact that it does have a strong architectural look and presence that you don’t really so often find in America.



1408_1.jpgHe’s not a movie or rock star (at least not yet), but Tom Ford, whose rise to fame came in the ’90s as creative director at Gucci and later, at Yves Saint Laurent Rive Gauche, is clearly the closest thing that the fashion world has to such a personality aside from say, Karl Lagerfeld.

If Ford and Lagerfeld are the biggest stars in fashion, then last night, Fifth Avenue was the ultimate red carpet, with Ford making an exclusive personal appearance at Saks Fifth Avenue, to launch his new Tom Ford Estee Lauder limited edition makeup and fragrance collection, while Lagerfeld was on hand to celebrate the opening of the new Fendi flagship just three blocks away.

To go with “Amber Nude,” the Tom Ford Estee Lauder collection’s namesake, a nude colored carpet was rolled out for Ford’s arrival. A round of cheers and applause broke out as he strode from the entrance to the rear of the store, where a minimalist Lucite table flanked by white flowers, long curtains and a female staff of attendants wearing cream-colored ensembles had been set up for him to receive fans in a grand manner.

Estee Lauder estimated the crowd to be over 1000, the largest turnout for a launch at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York. Customers had been lined up for hours waiting to meet him and to have one of the products from the new collection signed by Ford.

“The transition from fashion to beauty was natural for me because both celebrate the beauty of women,” said Ford, who plans to launch an eponymous cosmetics line next fall (with Estee Lauder’s backing) as well as a Tom Ford men’s wear collection with business partner and ex-Gucci CEO Domenico de Sole. Both resigned from the Gucci Group in 2004. Last night’s launch, as well as a presentation of a new sunglass collection for Spring 2006 last week at a trade show in Paris, marks Ford’s return to the fashion limelight.

Ford and the Estee Lauder company announced their partnership this past spring, the first time that Estee Lauder has collaborated with a fashion designer. So why Tom Ford?

“Tom Ford really epitomizes style, elegance, innovation and I think that it was a perfect mix,” said Aerin Lauder, granddaughter of Estee Lauder and Senior Vice President in the company. As John Demsey [Global Brand President of Estee Lauder] said, it’s beauty history.”

Evelyn Lauder’s words of admiration for Ford were something akin to a teenager’s crush. On the choice of Ford she answered with gusto, “Because he’s hot! Because he’s cute, he’s got a tremendous fashion sense, he loves to dress women, he loves to fix women up. He tells me, I need a different pair of eyeglasses, how to do my hair a certain way. He’s terrific, and people trust him. He is very creative.”

Ford’s trademark style – oozing with sex appeal – comes with the golden combination of his star status coupled with acceptable levels of edginess, making him a good choice for a company looking to appeal to a younger customer for whom “Sex and the City” is a bible.

“He’s an American fashion icon, and the association with Estee Lauder, the American beauty icon, is a match made in heaven,” said John Demsey.

“I feel like I stepped through the fountain of youth!” exclaimed Richie Rich of Heatherette about entering the Ford lair at Saks that evening. “I feel totally youthful already. I love Tom Ford, though. He has such a mysterious quality to him, but when you get down to it, he’s just a homegrown boy like Traver [Rains] is. He’s just so cool. He’s so down-to-earth and nice. Carolyn Murphy [star of the Youth Dew Amber Nude campaign] and I were just talking about how he reeks that sex appeal, like whether you’re a boy, girl or in-between.”

As evidenced by Ford’s November W magazine photo spread by Steven Meisel, which show Ford posing with sex dolls, buffing the bare bottoms of three muscular men and even taking his own turn as a nude subject, creatively he attempts to create strong images that push boundaries. And for his upcoming sunglass ad campaign, Ford paid two porn actors to have sex on set.

So was Estee Lauder ever concerned that Ford would ever cross into controversial territory with them?

“No, not at all!” said Evelyn Lauder. “Why would he be controversial, he’s adorable!”

Aerin Lauder noted that when her grandmother first came out with Youth Dew, the fragrance that Ford updated as Youth Dew Amber Nude, the campaign “was very controversial. It was a nude [woman], it was a black and white photograph, and I think he’s kind of created that same buzz for the brand that she created with Youth Dew when she first launched it.”

While the showman in Ford may opt for stylized, sexy imagery in the ad campaigns he creates – after all, that’s what creates hype and buzz for a product – the Amber Nude makeup collection itself is the opposite of theatrical. Instead, it epitomizes Ford’s philosophy of natural beauty – using makeup to enhance what your mama gave you.

It’s a neutral collection consisting of creamy nude lipsticks flecked with gold shimmer, a bronzer, a nail polish, and a few shimmery, earthy eye shadows. The most popular product so far seems to be the eye gloss, a transparent black shadow that gives the eyes an instant smoky effect. And because it’s a gloss, there’s no danger of raccoon eyes that heavier dark powders can create if not applied correctly. It’s no wonder that it sold out at Saks at the event and now has a waiting list.

“I do really quite like a natural beauty,” Ford told Fashion Wire Daily as he made his way back to the VIP cocktail party being held at Saks in his honor, after meeting hundreds of fans. “I like them when it looks relaxed enough that they’re touchable. It’s funny, someone was waiting in line and they said, ‘Are you going to do a lip liner?’ and I said, ‘No! I hate lipliners!’ I hate that, like, hard line. I just don’t like it.”

“I don’t necessarily mind artifice,” he continued, “but I like artifice to make you look like an enhanced version of reality.”

The ability to take nature and improve upon it in such a way that hand of the manipulator virtually disappears is perhaps the ultimate task of anyone involved in the beauty business today. Ford’s supporters like Estee Lauder and Vogue’s Andre Leon Talley are confident that his move from fashion to beauty will be an unmitigated success. Judging by the positive reception for his Amber Nude collection at Saks last night, he appears to be on his way to another conquest.

“Tom Ford is a genius,” said Talley. “He’s a dazzling superstar. And for me, anything he does is way beyond the stratosphere of style. It’s beyond fashion. He has impacted upon our culture and our times with his point of view, which I find unique and wonderful and so strong, and so brilliant. Like Andy Warhol, you can only be great when you are yourself, and that’s what Tom is.”

Now, it’s just a matter of waiting to see how that point of view will translate itself to the silver screen, Ford’s next major amibition.

He was the world’s leading fashion designer. So what did Tom Ford do next? Turn his attention to women’s faces, of course. Helen Brown reports on his supersexy new make-up range

She looked impossibly glamorous and enviably sexy — part rock star’s girlfriend and part millionairess. She wore a figure-hugging white dress that had a flesh-baring cutout running from below her breast to the top of her hip. Her eyes smouldered through dark eye shadow, her chiselled cheekbones were accentuated with matt bronzer and her lips were the palest shade of beige. It was 1996, and I was looking at an image of the model Georgina Grenville in a magazine advertisement for Gucci, the brand that Tom Ford famously put back on the fashion map. This is my first memory of the Tom Ford make-up look.

Since that time, no matter what fashion statement the designer was making — tailored trousers with spiked heels, or tight black shirts unbuttoned to the navel — his original make-up vision of smoky eyes and burnished skin has remained the perfect complement.

It shouldn’t be a total surprise, then, that Ford’s first project since leaving the Gucci Group and setting up his own company is a make-up collection. Created in collaboration with Estée Lauder, the limited-edition Amber Nude range is based on this enduring beauty ideal. It is made up of 11 individual items, all inspired by Youth Dew Amber Nude, a new, lighter take on Estée Lauder’s classic 1950s fragrance. Each product comes packaged in sleek, fluted gold packaging; the compact fastens with a sophisticated amber clasp. It is undeniably luxurious, as you would expect from anything Ford puts his name to. In fact, he has done more than just grace the range with his name: although the formulations are not new to Estée Lauder, he has had the final say on everything from the advertising of the range to the design of the shopping bag.

So why should women listen to Ford when it comes to make-up? When you consider that he admits to using tinted moisturiser and bronzer himself, plus the fact that he has been bringing his beauty vision to catwalk shows and ad campaigns for years, the idea that he is qualified to create make-up becomes much easier to accept.

How does Ford think a woman should dress her face? “I’m very much about the eye,” he says. “If there is to be visible make-up on the face, I prefer a sensual, sexy eye, with a more natural mouth. And I like shading under the cheekbones, to accentuate the architecture.” His collection has all the essential components to achieve this.

The make-up artist Mary Greenwell agrees. “To me, the range epitomises the universally glamorous, sensual, sexy, Tom Ford extravaganza. The face of the range, Carolyn Murphy, is the personification of the feline gorgeousness associated with the Tom Ford look.”

After applying foundation where needed (strong eyes require a flawless backdrop), Greenwell suggests applying The Face Gloss in Amber Nude (£30) — Ford’s favourite product — above and on the cheekbones as well as on temples as a highlighter. Then comes the bronzer. “Ford never goes for pretty, pretty blush,” says Greenwell, who advises brushing The Bronzer in Bronze Amber (£45) under the cheekbones to contour the cheek, then into the hairline and under the chin for further chiselling.

For the eyes, there is the sooty Eye Gloss in Black Amber (£30), which Greenwell describes as a “one-stop product for contemporary, glossy, smoky eyes”. Smear it over the entire eyelid with your fingertips, then add black mascara and eye pencil along the upper lash line.

In keeping with Ford’s penchant for pale lips, the lipsticks in the collection come in four graduating shades of fleshy beige. “When I see a mouth with an enormous amount of lipstick on it, I don’t find it sexy, because I don’t find it kissable,” he says. The most understated choice in the range is The Lip in Amber Blonde (£22), the palest shade, for what Greenwell terms “a Belle de Jour lip”. Finish with a dot of The Lip Polish in Amber Nude (£22) on the centre of the mouth.

All that remains is to slip on your most unashamedly seductive frock, and your transformation into a “glamorous, sensual, sexy” Ford woman will be complete.


Launch of Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection

The launch of the Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection attracted a crowd of over 1000 people to Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City today. Customers lined up to purchase the limited quantities of makeup and fragrance products created by world-renowned designer Tom Ford in collaboration with Estée Lauder. The crowd was the largest ever for a launch at the Saks Fifth Avenue flagship and the limited edition makeup products are virtually sold out.

Estée Lauder announced the collaboration with Tom Ford in April 2005. The Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection, specially created for the 2005 holiday season, is a re-interpretation of select iconic Estée Lauder products including its famous Youth Dew fragrance and the brand’s original gold fluted makeup packaging. The initial lineup features 13 items, including the new Youth Dew Amber Nude Fragrance Collection and the new Amber Nude Limited Edition Makeup Collection of lipsticks and compacts in sophisticated nude shades. Estée Lauder spokesmodel Carolyn Murphy is featured in the sensual advertising as a reclining nude reminiscent of the nude in the original Youth Dew advertising from 1953.

Every fragrance launched by Estée Lauder since its inception in 1946 has debuted at Saks Fifth Avenue’s New York City flagship. Saks Fifth Avenue stores around the country are also reporting strong sales of the Tom Ford Estée Lauder Collection. While the Youth Dew Amber Nude fragrance will remain in the Estée Lauder line, the makeup items are limited editions available for the holiday 2005 season only.
