Hankyu men’s and Tom Ford’s fashion

shop_osaka1.jpgThe “men’s products only” fashion building “Hankyu men’s” has been opened at the Hankyu department store in Osaka. They have the world-first Louis Vuitton shop that only men’s products on offer, or the world-second shop of Tom Ford, who used to work at Gucci, following its NY’s open and so on, and this must be an endlessly-so- interesting department store for those men who are into fashion.

A strong start with Tom Ford

harrods-tom-ford.jpgLONDON — Tom Ford is a big hit in London.

The Tom Ford Men’s Wear collection went on sale last week at Harrods, and already the Knightsbridge store has reported waiting lists and preorders on key items.

Tom Ford Men’s Wear is stocked exclusively in London at the department store as part of a two-year partnership. There are also plans for a 1,175-square-foot Tom Ford shop-in-shop to open inside the store in late spring. This confirms a DNR report last October.

The brand’s next major store opening is set for Milan in June. The store will cover more than 10,000 square feet. A stand-alone Tom Ford flagship in London is scheduled for 2009.

“We are excited about the strong start we have seen on Tom Ford, and we are looking forward to a fantastic 2008 with the brand,” said Stewart Mancey, Harrods men’s international designer buyer. “It has had a fantastic start with all categories. Shirts and ties are clearing high quantities. Suitings in particular have performed very well, with no apparent price resistance.”

Mancey said key selling points in the collection include the working cuffs on jackets, side-fastening trousers and fabric selection. Shirts are all sold unfinished and tailored to customer requirements; belt loops on trousers are optional. Meanwhile the high-quality fabric on the three-piece pinstripe wool suit has impressed consumers.

“They offer a point of difference in the rtw market,” Mancey said. Hot products on the preorder and waiting lists are primarily from the cashmere range, including eggplant cashmere silk knits and ribbed cashmere cardigans in cream and navy. Each, in one week, has generated preorder lists of 10-plus people. The knits will be on sale in the store within the next month.

The Tom Ford rtw collection is currently housed in Harrods’ ground floor tailored clothing department. When the shop-in-shop opens, it will house the complete Tom Ford men’s offering, which ranges from rtw and made-to-measure clothing to footwear, accessories, eyewear, fragrances and beauty. The shop will also be located on the ground floor with direct access from Door 3 on Basil Street.

“We are excited to be launching the collection exclusively in the U.K. with Harrods,” said Domenico DeSole, chairman of Tom Ford International, in a statement. “With a clearly defined distribution plan in place and a discerning eye on quality, service and design, we are poised to establish the first true luxury brand of the 21st century.”

Does Tom Ford Hate The Straights?

A new Tom Ford Menswear ad features a two-page spread [page one pictured] of some serious naked woman vs. clothed man violence. Angry advertising authority Copyranter argues that this is yet another piece of the designer’s unfolding plot to destroy heterosexual men. But we’re not so sure. As he notes, the ad appeared in Details, and the male model, what with his metrosexuality and niche beer selection, is clearly gay. So this is actually more of a symbol of Tom Ford’s disdain for gay men who would try to pass as straight. That makes us feel much better. The second half of the ad, with the violent crotch-grab payoff, after the jump.

A Badu Move

Erykah BaduNEVER one to shy away from grabbing the occasional headline – particularly when it comes to advertising – Vogue.com hears that Tom Ford is working with politically outspoken singer Erykah Badu. The American soulstress will be the face of Ford’s new fragrance, the name of which has not yet been released. Badu shot to fame in the Nineties with hits such On & On, which earned her a Grammy, and was known early in her career for her colourful African headwraps; she also changed the spelling of her name, which was originally ‘Erica’, to ‘Erykah’, which she believed to be her original ‘slave’ name. But while she may have been out of the musical limelight for almost four years, getting in front of the lens for Ford shouldn’t be too much of an upheaval for her – she has recently been trying to crack Hollywood, with parts in movies such as The Cider House Rules. Tom Ford at the LACMA II

Tom FordWhile he may have dressed multiple MOTHs (four to date) as well as James Bond, every so often we’re reminded that Tom Ford is really his own best model. In the same sort of way that a restaurant with an absentee owner never seems quite right, Ford’s clothes come across so well precisely because they’ve been road tested and perfected by the man himself, who just happens to be one of the most stylish men on the planet.

The other night at the opening of a new wing at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (aka LACMA), Ford wore a black velvet single-breasted peak-lapel dinner jacket with a grosgrain waistcoat, black wool tuxedo trousers, a white cotton piqué tuxedo shirt, slightly oversized black velvet bowtie, silk zebra print pocket square, diamond and sapphire shirt studs, and a signature pair of aviator-inspired sunglasses, all of his own design. Meanwhile, a few days earlier at the Grammys, Tom Hanks was the best-dressed man around in the classic Ford single-breasted peak lapel suit favored by MOTHs everywhere, while Jay-Z sported another version of the Ford dinner jacket, in black jaquard.

Tom Ford had a party at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

rwilsontfordmshriverq_020902.jpgLast Saturday night in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (known locally as LACMA), particularly its newest addition, the travertine-marble clad Renzo Piano designed Broad Contemporary Art Museum (already known as BCAM –pronounced bee-cam) had its star-studded opening.

There were more than 1,100 guests, not only from the area but also from all over the United States and Europe, as well prominent entertainment industry figures, artists, executives and civic leaders who gathered for the grand occasion. They entered on a red carpet by greeted by costumed stilt-walkers to the sound of Taiko drums. Think guests arriving for Oscar night and you get the picture.

Tom Ford was accompanied by Rita Wilson, Maria Shriver and his friend Richard Buckle. ………..
